Sightings to Date.

24th/25th August...Three Avocets on the Allen Pool, (all adults). These birds seem to be feeding up before flying south.

23rd July...Five Avocets (4 Juveniles and an Adult) flew in to the Allen Pool at 7.30am .(Ray Hobbs). These birds are probably from Marshside or Martin Mere? They slept all day till 4.30pm, then flew off in the evening.

1st July and 6th July...9am...One Avocet on the EM Pool. 1pm...One Avocet on the Allen Pool. No sign of the Greenshank! The recent Rains don't seem to have done much good, (there are still Two Pools dry). A total of Twenty Four Nests have been established. Of these Nineteen Nests have been Robbed/Abandoned. Five Nests Hatched Eleven Chicks (None of which survive). These are likely to be the final figures for this Season.

30th June...1pm...Five Avocets on the Allen Pool. June 30th Count on Allen/ Eric Morecambe Pools this evening, Black tails 141 Greenshank 1 Redshank 65 Avocet 8 Teal 46 Lapwing94. (John Wilson) It would appear that there are Avocets coming in to roost in the evening.

29th June...9am...Four Avocets on the EM Pool. More birds have flown South? I have heard today that there are Three young Avocets at Martin Mere, plus Three young at Marshside! The new Three Storey Hide at Martin Mere should be open in November.

28th June...12.30am...Seven Avocets on the EM Pool. The lone bird sitting seems to have given up and departed. The Flood and the EM pool next to it have dried up! The Avocets seem to have finally given up the idea of breeding and are drifting away. There have been very few sitings away from this site and none from the regular Seawatches that have taken place at Jenny Browns Point!

27th June...A day away in Longdendale Derbyshire.

26th June...8.30am to 9.30am...Ten Avocets on the EM Pool. One bird sitting. The Nest on The Flood seems to have failed, probably trampled by the Cows who have moved into this area again. The numbers of adult Avocets seems to be reducing day by day, whether they have decided to head south early or are still in "The Bay" area I'm not sure. The remaining Nest can be viewed from the EM Hide by looking towards Warton, it can be seen on the mud in the next "Pool"!

25th June...9am...One Avocet on The Flood plus Twelve on the EM Pool. Two birds sitting. The Three missing birds are probably on the Kent Estuary.

24th June...11am...One Avocet on The Flood plus Fifteen on the EM Pool. Two birds sitting, no Chicks. I was told today that there are Three well grown Chicks at Marshside!

23rd June...8am to 10am...Two Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen on the EM Pool. There are now Two birds sitting, but sadly I could find No Chicks. The One and a Half inch of rain last night seems to have finished off the Chicks. If anybody can find them I would be delighted to be wrong, but it seems unlikely with Sixteen adults present. However I will continue to search!

22nd June...10am...One Avocet on The Flood plus Twelve on the EM Pool, Three Chicks. There is a bird sitting on The Flood site but it seems to spend 50% of the time feeding on the tiny puddle that is now"The Flood".

21st June...9am...Two Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve on the EM Pool and Three Chicks! The family of Three Chicks have been walked to the EM Pool nearest the EM Hide. I could not find the other single Chick. There is another pair incubating on "The Flood" which does not seem very wise as this pool is almost dry! The eggs are due to hatch about the 14th July if they survive that long?

20th June...9.30am...Three Avocets on The Flood plus Four Chicks. Nine Avocets on the EM Pool. One family of Three Chicks plus one single Chick. The single Chick seems to be guarded by One adult whereas the family of three Chicks have both parents to look after them!

19th June...8.30am...Eight Avocets on The Flood plus Six Chicks. Five Avocets on the EM Pool. There are no longer any birds sitting. The Nests on The Flood have produced one clutch of Four plus one clutch of Two. The Nest on the EM Pool has probably been trodden on by Cows likewise the failed Nest on The Flood! The season to date:- A total of Twenty Two Nests have been established. Of these Seventeen Nests have been Robbed/Abandoned. Five Nests Hatched Eleven Chicks (Six of which survive).

On Friday 18th there was one pair of Avocets with two recently hatched young on the Flood with one pair still sitting. Looked like the two pairs on the spit had hatched but could not see if the second pair had young or not. (Robin Horner)

During the period 14th 1o 19th June I was staying in Keswick at Cranford House. watching Ospreys and Otters on Bassenthwaite Lake and exploring the River South Tyne valley from Alton to Garrigill.

14th June...11am...Four Avocets on The Flood plus Five on the EM Pool. Four birds sitting.

13th June...The Flood and EM Pool, [12 Avocets no Chicks] Four Nests found! ....(Peter Crooks/Robin Horner) I was otherwise engaged (Rambling).

12th June...10.30am...Fifteen Avocets on The Flood plus One on the EM Pool. Four birds sitting! another Nest trampled!

11th June...8.30am...Sixteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the EM Pool. Five birds sitting! The Cows have trampled another Nest!

10th June...Car in Dock again so...5pm...Twelve Avocet on The Flood plus One on the EM Pool. Viewing almost impossible due to the Sun Glare! Still Six birds sitting, but I did see a near miss re The Cows while I was there.

9th June...1pm...Sixteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the EM Pool. No sign of the Chick today after several attempts to find it. I just hope It's gone walkabouts again. The Cows have moved further out on the Salt Marsh but they do return to drink at the Trough.

8th June...11am...Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Four on the EM pool, plus One Chick. Six Birds sitting, (another pair have decided to settle down). All the Breeding pairs are playing Russian Roulette with the Cows who wander all over the site. Is there another Avocet Breeding Site with such a rich variety of Predators?Author

7th June Foggy till 12.30pm...Sixteen avocets on The Flood plus Four on the EM Pool and One Chick. Five birds sitting, (another pair have decided to settle down)! The Parent birds have decided to move the Chick to the EM Pool, they seem to go in for Marathons!

6th June...9am...Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the EM Pool. Four birds sitting. Unfortunately somebody has added Thirty plus Cows since yesterday and one of the Nests has been trampled. The footmarks are clear in the mud. The birds were trying to defend two of the Nests while I was present, (feigning a broken wing to try to lead the intruder away). Fortunately the Cows just missed the Nests. The One chick survived all this by being brooded during the whole episode!

5th June...8.30am...Sixteen Avocets on The Flood including One Chick. The Chick was feeding well and has put on some weight. Thanks to Pete Crooks for helping with the count.

4th June...Car in Dock so...3.30pm...Twelve Avocets on The Flood, no sign of a Chick! I have not given up hope yet as afternoon sightings from The Viewpoint are always difficult with the Sun reflecting off the water. The good News:- still Five birds sitting! A Remark from a visiting birder "There are plenty of Avocet Chicks at Blacktoft"!

3rd June...It Rained all night and it Rained all day! I will try to assess the situation tomorrow.

2nd June...1.30pm...Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Three (including One Chick) on the EM Pool. Another Nest found today, there are now Five birds sitting. The season to date:- A total of Twenty Nests have been established. Of these Twelve Nests have been Robbed/Abandoned. Three Nests Hatched Five Chicks (One of which survives). Five birds are at present sitting.

1st June...10am...Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Four including One Chick on the Allen Pool. The Allen Pool Nest has Hatched at last! There are now Four birds sitting and One Chick. The Chick is spending most of the time being brooded. The critical time seems to be when the parent birds swim the Chick off the Island!

31st May...9.30am...Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the Allen Pool. Still Five birds sitting. No sign of young at 2pm (this Nest must be due now)!

30th May...A Day Away walking in the Lake District!

29th May...10am...Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two Avocets on the Allen Pool! Five birds sitting. Two local Birders saw the nest intact at 3pm on the 28th of May. This Nest must have been Robbed/Abandoned as the surrounding BH Gull Nests are all intact and the Avocet count (16) is normal with no sign of Chicks. There is One more Nest that is due to hatch in the next few days! If? this is a successful hatch I don't expect any more until the 14th to 25th June approximately. Martin Mere still have 3 Chicks (see 26th May).

28th May...8am...Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Three on the Allen Pool. Six birds sitting. Because the water is now low the off duty birds are flying farther afield to feed. Non of the birds will now feed in the Allen Pool, it is probably badly polluted with Gull Droppings!

27th May...9am...Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Three on the Allen Pool. Six birds sitting. Another Nest found today! If the birds can survive the Forecasted Wet Bank Holiday Weather, we may have some surviving Chicks?

26th May...1.00pm...Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the Allen Pool. Five birds sitting, there may possibly be more confirmed soon. Hopefully during the next Seven days there could be Chicks Hatching! There have been 3 Avocet Chicks Hatched at Martin Mere today, their first ever breeding success! No News as yet from Marshside? If you have any knowledge of the Marshside Avocets let me know by using this Link.

25th May...9.30am...Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus One on the EM Pool plus Three on the Allen Pool. Five birds sitting, another Nest found today! The season so far :- A total of Eighteen Nests have been established. Of these Eleven have been Robbed/Abandoned. Two Nests hatched Four Chicks non of which survived! There are at present Five birds sitting. (18-11) -2 = 5

24th May...10.30am...Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on the EM pool plus Three Avocets on the Allen Pool. Four birds sitting. Since 4pm yesterday another Nest has been Robbed/Abandoned. Another Two pairs are looking Broody!

23rd May...9.30am...Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Four on the Allen Pool. No change in the Nesting bird numbers.

22nd May...8.30am...Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Six on the Allen Pool. Five birds sitting. The Avocet Numbers seem to have settled down for the time being to Sixteen, (a further Eight birds may be in the locality)? All being well I am expecting more Chicks to hatch in the period 28th May to the end of June . It is possible that there are more Nests in the area that nobody has found! It is rumoured that there is a Avocet Colony Further North?

21st May...8.30am...Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the EM Flash plus Four on the Allen Pool. Four birds sitting. I found another Nest today and there may possibly be another shortly. I will not publish their location!

20th May...9.30am...Sixteen Avocets on The Flood plus Four on the Allen Pool, Three birds sitting. Confirmation of Ken Harrison's siting of Two Chicks on the 16th by John Wilson. (When I arrived at the hide in the early evening the people in the hide said that the pair plus 2 young left the Allen Pool crossed the bank and swam across the Eric M pool. When I arrived they were about half way across the EM pool . They took them to the far SE corner where they were brooded for a while then they fed.) Unfortunately I have been unable to spot any chicks since May the 15th.

19th May...8.30am...Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Two on the EM flash plus Four on the Allen Pool. Three birds sitting. Yet another Nest has been robbed overnight! No sign of any Chicks! At this rate of predation there will be no chicks surviving this year!

18th may...9am...Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Three on the EM flash plus Eight on the Allen Pool. A Pair on The Flood were Mating! A rare day when all the birds were present, however still only Four birds sitting and no sign of any Chicks. I am told that John Wilson saw Two Chicks at the back of the EM Pool on the 16th.

17th May...9.30am...Three Avocets on the EM Flash plus Ten on the Allen Pool. Four birds sitting. No sign of any Chicks. Later I counted Sixteen avocets in total which gives some hope that there may be Two more pairs guarding Chicks?

16th May (LM Log) Ten Avocets on the Allen Pool, plus Two Chicks. (Ken Harrison) Another Nest must have hatched because there was definitely only One Chick yesterday! The parents of the first chick have hopefully taken it away to a Safe Place!

15th May...9.15am...Four Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen on the Allen Pool. Five Birds sitting. Three nests have been robbed! One surviving Chick.

14th May...9am...Two Avocets on The Flood plus Eighteen on the Allen Pool. The Two Chicks have been swum off the Island to the muddy fringe of the Pool. Eight birds sitting. Herring Gulls attacking Chicks!..2.30pm...Only One Chick surviving, the other Chick was probably taken by a Herring or Greater Blackback Gull.

13th May...10am...Four Avocets on The Flood plus Sixteen on the Allen Pool. Nine birds are sitting! A Third Island is being used for breeding. At 20.05 BST Two Chicks were Hatched (Robin Horner).

27th April...9am...One Avocets on The Flood plus Nine Avocets on the EM Pool plus Twelve Avocets on the Allen Pool. The Mate to the Avocet "sitting" on The Flood flew to the Allen Pool to feed. There are at least Nine pairs sitting possibly Ten. The next visit should confirm this!

26th April...9.30am...Two Avocets on The Flood plus Ten Avocets on the EM Pool plus Nine Avocets on the Allen Pool. The second pair who were on The Flood seem to have lost interest in the site, however the small Islands on the EM Pool have proved very attractive to the breeding birds.

25th April...8.30am...Three Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve Avocets on the EM Pool plus Seven Avocets on the Allen Pool. Eight birds sitting. There is still another One or possibly Two pairs in the area who may breed this season.

It looks as though there will shortly be more birds sitting on the EM and Allen Pools!...UPDATE... 12th April...10am...Sixteen Avocets on the Allen Pool, there appears to be Seven pairs and two singles. Although all the birds are now probably on the same pool there doesn't appear to be enough Nesting Area for this number of birds. The second Male Marsh Harrier (a young bird) was seen again today.

11th April...9am...Two Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve on the Allen Pool................ 12 pm... Two Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen on the Allen Pool. No sign of nesting so far. Another Male Marsh Harrier turned up today but was seen off by the Resident Male.

Birds.

26th March...Morning...Eight Avocets on The Flood. The path to the EM Hide is now a mere two inches under water. I was told yesterday that there are Eight Avocets at Marshside RSPB. No Avocets seen today, the Car Park is flooded and the Avocets (if they are still around) now have several square miles of flooded marsh to feed on at Low Tide so will be difficult to find! Tomorrows Tide is even higher but all depends on the Wind, (High Tides plus SW Winds = Flooding).

18th March...9am...Four Avocets on The Flood plus One on the Allen Pool. 1pm...Twelve Avocets on The Flood. I have just heard that the single Avocet at Moorside has moved on and was missing on the 15th of March.
