10 August:- 8.30am,
Leighton Moss Staff arrive to cut the grass etc., round the Allen
Pool; The EM Hide is being demolished at the same time! All the
birds flew including the Four Avocet Chicks (Only just managing to
clear
the banking around the pool)! End of Mission;
All the chicks have flown and it is not possible to follow their
progress.
9th August:- The
Four Chicks are still present. The Demolition
of The Eric Morecambe Hide has been postponed for another day! The
Contractors from Norfolk? are supposed to arrive on the 13th August
to build the New EM Hide!
8th August:- No
Change, however I suspect at least Two of The Chicks can fly. I
will attempt to get to the Allen Hide tomorrow before the wrecking
of
the EM Hide to see what happens to the birds on The Allen Pool.
7th August:- Still
Four Chicks on The Allen Pool, (They seem to favour the
EM side of The Pool). I don't think this will last long when they
start tearing
the EM Hide down on the 9th!
6th August:- Still
Four Chicks present (I have not
seen a Chick fly this Month). Hopefully they will be spurred
on to take fight when they start demolishing the Eric Morecambe
Hide
on the 9th August!

Change, however I have just found out that the EM Hide is to be
replaced starting on the 9th August. Will the
Avocet Chicks survive? Leighton Moss seem unconcerned about this!

(It is being driven away).

after The gales or the newcomers? are from The Allen Pool). Twenty
Four Chicks
on The Allen Pool (The Final Nest has now
hatched [3 Chicks]), the
new Chicks have been moved to the mud at the back of The Pool!

Chicks on The Flood (No change) plus Twenty two on The Allen Pool. One
of the recently hatched brood of four has died. The
Final Nest is still incubating with One Chick visible! More
families with near adult fledged birds have flown from the Allen
Pool!
24th June:- Six Avocets on The
Flood plus Sixteen on The Allen Pool. Chick report; Six Chicks
on The Flood plus Twenty Seven on the Allen Pool. Several
families from The Flood and Allen Pools have flown away from the
site! This explains
the much lower numbers after The Storm! Good News:- The family
of Two Chicks seen yesterday are now Four (Nest deserted). I can
still
only see One Chick from the final Nest (The adults are still attempting
to incubate more).
23rd June:- Chick Report; The
Flood, Much higher water level. No Birds on The water due
to strong winds! Unable to count! Allen Pool; much more sheltered, same
number of Chicks as Yesterday plus One More as the final nest is
Hatching
Young! The Two final nests
are still hatching eggs/ brooding Chicks at the Nests so
there may be more Chicks soon, especially if the very strong winds
and
rain cease???

yesterday Five Chicks Have been lost from The Allen Pool! The
latest nest hatching young now has Three Chicks (with One
Egg to hatch). Only One nest now likely to hatch young in the near
future.

for 5/6 hours!!!!! There has been a loss
of one chick on The Allen Pool. There is now only One Nest
about to hatch young in the near future. The Two new Nests should
have
young in late June.

(29 Chicks). Only Two more Nests likely to Hatch Young for the

looks like Two new pair have finally settled down to the task of
rearing Young,
these chicks should hatch in the second half of June!
29th May:- Six Avocets on The

Nest that hatched on the 27th now has Four Chicks all feeding! Unfortunately
there has been a loss of One Chick on The Flood. There is
not enough Adult birds to guard the Chicks on The Flood! A
new Nest now has Two Eggs, the other
'possible' nesting bird seems to be moving every day so seems unlikely
to breed as yet!
28th May:- Nine Avocets on
The Flood plus Twenty Six on The Allen Pool. There
is now Three Chicks from the Nest that hatched yesterday!
Two more Nests are being established (An Egg is visible in one
of them).
27th May:- Nine Avocets on The
Flood plus Twenty Eight on The Allen Pool (a Full House). There
are Two Pairs of Avocets on The Allen pool trying to
Establish Nests! The locals don't Welcome
them. Another
Nest is Hatching Chicks One Wet Chick seen so far
(there will be more)! Only Three
more nests to hatch young now!

Fifteen chicks on The Flood (a loss of Three). The
Nest that hatched yesterday on The Allen Pool now has Three Chicks (one

Nest Hatching today. So far I have only seen One Chick (I'm

Avocets on The EM Pool plus Seven on The Allen Pool. Much flying
about between the Pools.
18th March:- 8am, Seven Avocets
on The Flood plus Three on The Allen Pool. The Avocets are still
very mobile and there are probably more birds feeding out on The
Salt Marsh.
17th March:- 10am, Two Avocets
on The Flood plus Six on The Eric Morecambe Pool plus Three on
The Allen Pool.
16th March:- 9am, Fifteen Avocets
on The Allen Pool. At least Four Pair present, the remainder are
pobably newcomers.
15th March:- 11am, Four Avocets
on The Flood plus Six on The Allen Pool. More mating today and
there was also some scraping (preparation for Nesting)
14th March:- 8am, Four Avocets
on The Flood. There may be more Avocets out on The Saltmarsh!
13th March:- 8am, Six Avocets
on The Flood. Two definite pairs one of which were mating! Bittern

flooded (High Tide). Most of the Islands are under water!

on The Allen Pool. Compare this with 72 Avocets
at Martin Mere!
7th March:- 8.15am, Seven Avocets
on The Allen Pool. Disturbed by a Raptor and flew to The EM Pool.
6th March:- A day away in Glencoynedale
5th March:- 12pm, Four Avocets
on The Flood plus One Avocet on the EM Pool!
4th March:- 11.30am, Seven Avocets
on The Allen Pool. It looks like many of the recent birds are birds
of passage!
3rd March:- 11am, Twelve Avocets
on The Flood.
2nd March:- 8am, Nine Avocets

avocet on The Flood, However an
influx of 35 Avocets at Martin Mere. Perhaps
some of these birds may be heading north!

on The Flood from the Eric Morecambe Hide. Perhaps the birds from
yesterday have flown to "The Land of The Celts"

Mere The
first of the returning Avocet flew in today, three birds, still
present late
afternoon
from the Ron Barker Hide. These birds are a little latter than
the first birds of 2011, but this isn't too surprising as the
recent
cold snap will have made them think twice before heading this far
North.
