21st July:- Chick not found today! This is the final report this year! The Nine surviving Chicks have Fledged and left The Site!

20th July:- A Day away on the shores of Rydal Water.

19th July:- Since yesterday The Chick has been Moved to The Flood!

18th July:- The Chick is looking fine. Heavy Rain Forecast for tommorrow!

17th July:- The surviving Chick looks bigger today (could be The Pool has shrunk).

16th July:- Eight Avocets on The EM Pool. The Young Chick is spending most of the time being Brooded!

15th July:- The last remaining Chick is still surviving on The EM Pool! The Allen Pool was flooded last night by a High Tide!

14th July:- The young Chick seen on the 12th July has now been moved to The EM Pool!

13th July:- A day away with Lancaster Fellwalkers

12th July:- 8.30am, One of the young Chicks has just been taken by a Carrion Crow!

11th July:- Three Avocets on The EM pool plus Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. There are now Two newly hatched Chicks. Both Chicks have been moved to the other side on The Allen Pool.

10th July:- Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on The EM Pool plus One Avocet on The Allen Pool. The Last remaining Nest on The Allen Pool now has One newly hatched Chick!

9th July:- Seventeen Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on The EM Pool plus One Avocet on The Allen Pool. The last remaining Nest on The Allen Pool still has Unhatched Eggs (seen well today during changeover). Will they Hatch????

8th July:- Four Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool plus One Avocet on The Allen Pool. The One sitting Avocet on The Allen Pool is still trying to hatch Four Eggs! This now looks like the End Game and I will end this excercise when I know the results of his/her labours!

7th July:- One Avocet on The Flood plus Ten Avocets on The EM Pool plus One Avocet on The Allen Pool. The New Chick found yesterday was not found today!

6th July:- One Avocet on The EM Pool plus Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. Another Nest on The Allen Pool Has Hatched One Chick, However another Nest has been abandoned. There is only One Pair incubating Eggs now!

5th July:- One Avocet on The EM Pool plus Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Well Grown Chick on The Allen Pool has flown to The EM Pool! Thirteen Avocets reported at Arnside! All the Pools have higher water levels due to yesterday's Rain!

4th July:- Four Avocets on The EM Pool plus Five Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Flood is almost dry! It may be refreshed by the next High Tides starting on The 13th July. No change in the Chick numbers.

3rd July:- Four Avocets on The Flood plus Seventeen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Five Avocets on The Allen Pool. No Change in the Chick numbers.Very little water in The Pools, there will be high tides on the 13th for 3 days!

2nd July:- Sixteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two Avocets on The EM Pool plus Seventeen Avocets on The Allen Pool. The New Chick found on The 30th June was not found today! Another Nest has been Abandoned! There are now only Three Nests with sitting birds.

1st July:- A day away at Buxton!

30th June:- Twenty Two Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on The EM Pools plus Twelve Avocets on The Allen Pool. The One Chick seen on The 28th could not be found, however another Nest has hatched a Chick and it has been moved to the other side of The Pool.

27th June:- Five Avocets on The Flood plus Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Two Tiny Chicks seen yesterday could not be found! Just One well grown Chick and Five Nests (incubating Eggs) on The Allen Pool!

26th June:- Forty Avocets on The Flood plus Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool. The New Chick on The Allen Pool has been moved to another Island. You can now see there are "Two" Chicks in this family. About Thirty Five of the adults on The Flood appear to be in a feeding frenzy!

25th June:- Three of The Four Families on The Flood have Fledged and left the site! One Family of Two Chicks plus parents remain! On The Allen Pool there is One well grown Chick plus a new Chick which was first seen on the 23rd June! Five Nests on The Allen Pool are still incubating Eggs (these are probably re-sitting birds which failed the first time)!

24th June:- Forty Two Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool. plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Still Ten Chicks in total (Six on The Flood). The New Chick still survives (there may be more in the same nest)???

23rd June:- Forty Four Avocets on The Flood plus Seventeen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Another new Chick seen today (from a nest on The Allen Pool that is on the rear of an Island). Now Ten Chicks seen (includes Eight on The Flood).

22nd June:- Forty Four Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Nine Chicks seen (includes Eight on The Flood). The two Largest Chicks from The Allen Pool have flown to The Flood. seen by David Mower!

21st June:- Fifty Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Seven Chicks seen (includes Six on The Flood)

20th June:- 1pm, Eight Avocets at The Allen Pool. Only this Pool seen (Chicks are asleep at this time of day, only One Chick seen). will try again tomorrow!

19th June:- Forty Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fourteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. No Change in The Chick numbers but an obvious influx of non breeding birds from another site???

18th June:- Twenty Six Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM pool plus Twelve Avocets on The Allen Pool. No Change in the Chick Numbers, perhaps next week???

17th June:- Twenty Nine Avocets on The Flood plus Four Avocets on The EM Pool plus Eleven Avocets on The Allen Pool. The missing Chicks from yesterday were present today! Nine Chicks seen (Six on The Flood). Another Nest found on The Allen Pool with so far, One Egg!

16th June:- Nineteen Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only Seven Chicks seen! (includes Six on The Flood). Two Almost full grown Chicks on The Allen Pool could not be found! They may be behind one of The Islands???

14th June:- Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty Avocets on The Allen Pool. No Change re The Chicks (The new arrival is having a hard time surrounded by Gulls)!

13th June:- Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Avocets on The Allen Pool. Ten Chicks found ( including Six on The Flood). A new Chick hatched on The Allen Pool (very weak and wobbly). There are probably more Chicks in The Nest!

12th June:- Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM pool plus Nineteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Again only Nine Chicks found (includes Six on The Flood). JW saw Ten Chicks yesterday see Link

11th June:- Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Nineteen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirteen Avocets on the Allen Pool. A total of Nine Chicks (including "Six" on The Flood). However The Flood Chicks are now so big they cannot be Brooded, so are resting in the long grass which makes them difficult to find.

10th June:- Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Nineteen Avocets on The EM pool plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Eleven Chicks in Total (including Eight on The Flood)! There were Two more half grown Chicks on The Flood today, (There is no change re The Allen Pool Chicks)!!

9th June:- Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Avocets on The EM Pool plus Eighteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Nine Chicks found (including Six on the Flood)!

8th June:- Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fifteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Nine Chicks found (including Six on the Flood)!

7th June:- Seventeen Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty One Avocets on The EM Pool plus Nineteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Nine Chicks found (includes Six on The Flood). Three Nests on The Flood have been Predated since my last visit. Probably by A Fox!

6th June:- A day away in The Land of The Celts!

5th June:- Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Ten Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fifteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Ten Chicks seen (including Six on The Flood). Another Nest found on The Flood! Only Two more Nests (of the first Batch) are now 'about' to hatch young! Six Pairs will hatch eggs starting about the 17th of June!

4th June:- Seventeen Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. out Six 3rd June:- Two Nests on The Allen Pool have hatched young (a total of four so far). Another Nest found, also the lost Chick from yesterday found. There is now a total of Thirteen Chicks (including Six from the Flood).

2nd June:- Seven Avocets on The Flood plus Fifteen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twelve Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only Nine Chicks seen. The Chick that was moved on The 31st was not found. One of the new Nests on The Flood has been Abandoned/Predated!

31st May:- Nineteen Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets On The EM Pool plus Eighteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Again Ten Chicks seen (includes Six on The Flood). Another Nest found on The Flood!

30th May:- Nineteen Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fourteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. No further Chicks found but a New Nest Found. The Flood Nests are still intact!

29th May:- Fifteen Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. There are now Two more Nests in The Flood area! A total of Ten Chicks seen (Including Six on The Flood).

28th May:- Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Eleven Chicks seen (including Six on The flood). Another Nest is Hatching Young (Two Chick seen so far)! The Parent Bird is keeping them Brooded because of the Cold Wet Weather.

27th May:- Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twelve Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only Nine Chicks seen (including Six on The Flood). The Adult Avocets are Gradually leaving The Site (Sixty plus on the first of may, only Thirty Three today)!

26th May:- A Day Away on Huntingstile Crag.

25th May:- Thirty Five Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. A Total of Eleven Chicks (including Six on The Flood).

24th May:- Twenty Four Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Eighteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Twelve Chicks in total (including Six on The Flood). Another Nest with Three Chicks found!

23rd May:- Twenty One Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty One Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only Eleven Chicks found (Six of which were on The Flood). The numbers of surviving Chicks are rapidly decreasing!!! However I have not personally seen any Predation?????

22nd may:- Thirty Five Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on the EM Pool plus Twenty Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. Fifteen Chicks seen in Total (Six on The Flood)!

21st May:- Twenty Six Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Two Avocets on The Allen Pool. A Total of Seventeen Chicks seen, Four of which were on The Flood! Another Nest found with Two Chicks!

20th May:- Fifteen Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Avocets on The Allen Pool. Sixteen Chicks found including Three Chicks on The Flood. The Walkabout from The Allen Pool has began! There may be more Chicks on This Journey!

19th May:- 1pm, Fifteen Avocets on The Flood plus Two Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only Thirteen Chicks seen! It looks like There has been a mass walkabout or massacre since The 17th May! A morning count will probably be more accurate!

17th May:- Another Fourteen Chicks seen today! the numbers above have been adjusted!

16th May:- Two Avocets on The Flood plus Nine Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fifty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. Chicks are bursting out all over! Two more Nests have Hatched since yesterday!

15th May:- Four Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Nine Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Nest with Three Chicks seen yesterday no longer exists and I cannot find The Chicks. Two more Nests now have a single Chick each. The nest that had Two Chicks has now been reduced to One!

14th May:- A day away in the Loughrigg area.

13th May:- Two Avocets on The Flood plus Ten Avocets on The EM Pool plus Forty Five Avocets on The Allen Pool. Another Nest found with Three New Chicks!

12th May:- 7.30 to 10am, Two Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Forty Five Avocets on The Allen Pool. Another Nest has Two Chicks (both being brooded away from The Nest). 12.45 to 1.45, the two new Chicks are feeding and being Brooded away from The Nest (The Nest has Eggs still to be hatched)! The single Chick from yesterday still looks healthy!

11th May:- 7 to 10am, Three Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets on The EM pool plus Fifty Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. Only One Chick surviving today! There are now Twenty Eight Nests in total

10th May:- One Avocet on The Flood plus Eight Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fifty Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. There are only Two Chicks present today (in the same area as yesterday.

9th May:- 7 30 to 8 30am, Sixty Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. At least Fifteen non Breeding Birds present! The Three Chicks are now being Brooded away from the Nest and are making short forays away from the parent bird to feed.

8th May:- 8am, Five Avocets on The flood plus Eight Avocets on The EM pool plus Forty Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Three Chicks are now spending a few minutes away from their Nest!

7th May:- 6 30 to 8 30am, Two Avocets on The Flood plus Seven Avocets on The E M Pool plus Fifty Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool. Three Chicks Seen, same Nest as yesterday!

6th May:- 8am, Seven Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve Avocets on The EM Pool plus Forty Avocets on The Allen Pool.

1.30pm, One Chick seen when the parent birds were changing over on The Nest! There will be more Chicks but the Adults seem reluctant to release them into the Cold Winds.

18th April:- One Avocet on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The EM Pool plus Fifty Nine Avocets on The Allen Pool. Much confusion as to how many Pairs are actually Incubating!

17th April:- Eight Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Four Avocets on The EM pool plus Twenty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. An accurate count was impossible as LM staff had just renewed the Battery on the Electric Fence! on The Allen Pool.

16th April:- Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Ten Avocets on The EM Pool plus Forty Avocets on The Allen Pool. I could only find One Incubating Pair today.

15th April:- A day away in Longsleddale.

14th April:- 9.30am, Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Fifty Avocets on The Allen Pool. There is possibly another pair Incubating but not confirmed as yet. Most of The birds are still standing around doing nothing (accept Feeding now and again)!

13th April:- 9.30am, Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Two Avocets on the EM Pool plus Thirty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. There are now Two Pairs Incubating!

12th April:- 9.30am, Seven Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. Where have all the Avocets Gone???

11th April:- 8.30am, Fourty Seven Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Majority of the birds are now on The Allen Pool and seem to be in a Breeding Frame of Mind!

10th April:- 10.30am, Fourteen Avocets on The Flood plus Forty Avocets on The Allen Pool. A whole lot of mating going on!

9th April:- 2pm, Twenty Two Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. Several possible Nest Sites but none yet confirmed!

8th April:- Twenty Avocets on The Flood plus Thirty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Flood Avocets seem Settled, they may breed there this year???

31st March:- 9.30am, Eighteen Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. Allen Pool:- At least Four pairs showing signs of Nesting (no definite Nest Sites as yet)!

30th March:- 10.30am, There must have been either a Fox or Human interference to the Flood as there are no Birds of any kind on The Water! Nineteen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Forty Two Avocets on The Allen Pool!

29th March:- 10am, Twenty Avocets on The Flood plus Eight Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool. Allen Pool:- Three pair seem to be prospecting for Nest Sites.

28th March:- Eighteen Avocets on The Flood plus Thirty Six Avocets on The Allen Pool. Several Pairs were mating today! No definite Nesting activity as yet.

27th March:- Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Twelve Avocets on The EM Pool plus Thirty Two Avocets on The Allen Pool. Another Full House.

26th March:- Twelve Avocets on The Flood plus Forty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. More newcomers have arrived!

25th March:- 2pm, Twenty Three Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on The EM Pool plus Nineteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. A rare Full House!

24th March:- 10am, Ten Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Twenty Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. The ringed bird was still present (Sleeping most of the time)!

22nd March:- 10am, Thirteen Avocets on The Flood plus Twenty Seven Avocets on The Allen Pool. Details of The Ringed Bird on The Allen Pool! Left Leg, (Red over Yellow with black figures on The Yellow, looked like a black O). Right Leg, (Red over Grey) [could be a faded Green or even a Metal ring].

21st March:- 8am, Thirty Eight Avocets on The Allen Pool sheltering from the Strong Wind. All the birds were in a tight group standing in The Pool. One Avocet had leg rings (difficult to see due to the water depth). I could see a Red Ring on the right leg (it may possibly be the ringed bird from last year) ??????

20th March:- 9am, Twenty Eight Avocets on The Flood plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Wanderers appear to have returned??

19th March:- 8am, Fifteen Avocets on The Flood plus Five Avocets on The EM Pool plus Ten Avocets on The Allen Pool.

18th March:- Rain. Rain. Rain. Then at 1.30pm, Twenty One Avocets on The Allen Pool sheltering from the 50mph Gusts of wind! No Avocets seen on the other Pools! The Allen Pool is the only one that has some Shelter!

17th March:- 10am, Eleven Avocets on The Flood plus Eight Avocets on The EM Pool plus Seven Avocets on The Allen Pool. I don't seem to be able see as many Avocets as I saw on the 15th! They must have a wanderlust!

16th March:- 10am, Eleven Avocets on The Flood plus One Avocet on The EM Pool plus Thirteen Avocets on The Allen Pool. Either several Avocets are feeding elsewhere or they have moved on! However John Wilson had Forty Three Avocets At another time! Again strong Cold Westerly Winds.

15th March:- 9.30am, Twenty Three Avocets on The Flood plus Fourteen Avocets on The EM Pool plus Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Water was very Choppy due to the strong wind so I may have missed some birds!

14th March:- Fog, Fog, Fog, Perhaps Tomorrow will be better?

13th March:- Fog, Fog, Fog, It was never clear enough to do a count!!! I did see an Avocet on the nearest edge of The Flood Scraping, (The rest of The Pool was in thick Mist). I hope The Avocets don't Breed on this Pool as there is no protection from Foxes! The Water level on The Allen Pool is still much too high for Waders!

12th March:- 8am, Nineteen Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets on The EM Pool plus Nine Avocets on The Allen Pool. Still Thirty Nine Avocets in total. Viewing tomorrow may be a problem due to the forecast Fog.

11th March:- 9am, Twenty One Avocets on The Flood plus Eleven Avocets on The EM pool plus Seven Avocets on The Allen Pool. A total of Thirty Nine Avocets!

10th March:- 9.30am, Eighteen Avocets on The Flood plus Nine Avocets on The EM Pool plus Two Avocets on The Allen Pool. The total was the same as on the 8th of March but they are very flighty now, lots of flying between The Pools!

7th March:- 9.30am, Six Avocets on The Flood plus Three Avocets on The Allen Pool. A slight increase but, 104 Avocets at Martin Mere! They seem reluctant to fly farther north at the moment.

6th March:- 10.30am, Six Avocets on The Flood. Probably the birds that were seen on The 2nd of March. The Multi Strand Electric Fence has been erected around the Allen Pool.

5th March:- 8.30am, Two Avocets on The Allen Pool. There were Ninety Four Avocets at Martin Mere yesterday!

4th March:- 8am, Two Avocets on The Flood. 1.30pm, The same Two Avocets on The Allen Pool. The Tide was flooding over The Allen Pool sluice!

3rd March:- 12.45pm, 10 metre Tide. Four Avocets on The Allen Pool, Tide pouring in over The Allen Pool Sluice! To contrast this there are Eighty Four Avocets at Martin Mere, (perhaps a few will continue their journey North to Leighton Moss!!!

2nd March:- High tide overnight has flooded The Saltmarsh. 9am Two Avocets on The Flood plus Four Avocets on The Allen Pool. 12 midday, 10.3 metre High Tide. 1pm, all the Pools are flooded (no visible Islands). No Avocets visible!

1st March:- A day away in Dentdale, however Fourteen Avocets reported on The Flood by A N other!

28th February:- A Sunny calm Day (A rare event this Winter) 9am to 10am, Nine Avocets on The Flood.

27th February:- Four Avocets on The Flood, close to the Railway track. It is looking like the Fifteen birds seen on the 25th were birds of passage (where they were going too I have no idea)!

26th February:- Three Avocets seen on The Flood by A. N. Other from a passing Train.

25th February:- Fifteen Avocets on The Flood. Most of the birds were in a group with perhaps Two pairs separated! The Flood has natural drainage, it floods easily but drains much quicker than the other Pools.

24th February:- Eight Avocets on The Flood! my first sighting this year!

23rd February:- Five Avocets reported at The Allen Pool. If it ever stops Raining I will go and see for myself! Twenty Nine Avocets at Martin Mere today so I expect more at LM Soon!

22nd February:- Fourteen Avocets at Martin Mere. One Avocet seen by John Wilson on the EM Complex. A Rare fine day! I have yet to see an Avocet this year!

21st February:-Strong Winds and Rain (No Avocets Found).

20th February:- Several visits but no sign of any Avocets! The Saltmarsh Pools have 99% Ducks and 1% Waders. The Weather Cold with strong winds most of the birds were sheltering from the blast!

19th February:- One Avocet Reported on the EM Complex by several Birders. Now Ten Avocets at Martin Mere.

17th February:- Now Eight Avocets at Martin Mere! Is this a significant increase? The Pools on the EM Complex at Leighton Moss are really too deep for Avocets at the moment, after the recent Storms. However I will brave the horrendous Potholes on the entry track and put on my Wellies to check if there have been any arrivals there!

11th February:- Now Two Avocets at Martin Mere! (Is this the start of something Big)?

9th February:- A Single Avocet at Martin Mere! The Earliest record in Lancashire ever!! See Link
