Birding in the Lancaster area

Rivers

.

The Main river in the Lancaster area is the River Lune.

There are many waders in the lower reaches, with good birding sites at Sunderland Point Cockersands and Glasson Dock. There are occasional rarities such as Iceland Gull, Yellow Legged Gull, Whimbrel and Arctic Terns.

Little Egret have been seen on the Lune and around the Morecambe Bay area much more frequently in recent years. It is possible that they will breed in the next ten years!

Above the Tidal reaches there are Colonies of Sand Martins and the occasional Kingfisher. In summer there are Oystercatchers and other waders nesting on the gravel banks.

Other River Estuaries worth watching are the River Kent, the River Keer at Carnforth and the River Conder at Conder Green. See OS Landranger Series 97. Up to date local information from Lancaster and District Birdwatching Society
